Spiritualists are not tied to a creed or dogma. They accept seven basic principles, which are based on inspiration from discarnate spirits. These act as guide-lines for the development of a personal philosophy of how to live one’s life..
Modern Spiritualism originated from events at Hydesville, New York State, U.S.A. on March 31st 1848, when two sisters, Margarreta and Catherine Fox, dared to communicate with an entity which had been responsible for noisy night time disturbances. The girls challenged this invisible communicator to make the corresponding numbers of raps in response to finger snapping, clapping and noiseless movements of the hand; this it did.
The amazing results of a childish game suggested that some form of intelligence was behind the knocks. To prove that it was not an “April Fool” the parents asked personal questions, such as the number of children born to Mrs Fox. This could not have been answered by neighbours as the family was new to the district; yet the communicator replied correctly, even allowing for one child who had died in infancy. One of their neighbours, a former tenant of the house, introduced a method of questioning whereby the communicator gave raps for “Yes” and indicated “No” by remaining silent. Using this method, they elicited the information that the communicator was a former peddler, Charles B. Rosna, who had been murdered there in 1843 by a previous tenant, John C. Bell, and had been buried in the cellar which was verified. It seemed that the rapping’s had been made possible by the presence of the Fox Sisters, who were psychic.
Spirits also communicated through other psychics and instructed the investigators to form home circles for the purpose of further communication. The teachings received and the psychic phenomena produced, attracted the attention of eminent scientists and intellectuals in America and, from the 1850s Britain. There were many recorded events prior to the Hydesville events.
Our services contain no ritual or dogma, although a standard format is followed.
We have hymns followed by an address on Spiritualist philosophy,
There is a medium at all of our services who attempt to communicate with our departed loved ones and give evidence of their survival and that they continue to take an interest in our lives.
These communications prove that they still live in a world which is accessible to us and to which we will all continue our lives after physical death.
Spiritualists’ call this the ‘Spirit world’.
There is a freewill offering taken during the service.
Spiritual Healing is a form of Healing where energies from the World of Spirit are channelled to the patient through a Spiritualist Healing Medium. This is done by the gentle laying on of hands on to the body of the patient, which is known as Contact Healing or Distant Healing which is a short distance between the healer and patient using the direction of thought and prayer.
Whilst we are unable to offer Spiritual Healing at this time, we can arrange/give contact details for this to be given. We can offer Absent Healing where Healing thoughts are sent to a person who is not present.
The main aim of mediumship is to provide evidence of survival of the human personality beyond physical death. Mediumship is a transfer of information from the spirit of a deceased person via a ‘medium’ to a ‘recipient’. A medium has the ability to receive information from a communicating spirit and pass on that information. In many respects this will be personal to the recipient of the communication.
The main purpose of mediumship is to provide evidence that can be proof of survival to the recipient, not to predict the future, not to give advice and not to counsel. Mediumship is a means of enabling people in the spirit world, to communicate with us, thus enabling us to gain an understanding that the spirit of every person survives physical death.
The spirit of a person retains their personality, character, mind, memories, emotions, etc just as we knew them during their life on earth. People in the spirit world have opportunities to continue to learn and develop similarly to the personal growth experienced during earth life. Mediums cannot call up a particular person in the spirit world; it is they who choose to communicate with us. A medium’s primary purpose is to identify the spirit person who is communicating with them. It is expected that the communicator will provide a combination of personal information about themselves so that the recipient can identify them.
